Making a fire can be a lifesaving action in DayZ. It can keep you warm, dry your clothes, and cook your food. Its essential to know how to make a fire with materials you have or can find in the nearby area.
The best way to make a fire in DayZ is to combine a wooden stick with some rags or paper to build a fireplace. Pick up the fireplace and place it on a flat area or inside a grate in a building. Add fuel to the fireplace such as more wood. While holding matches or a lighter in your hand, approach the fireplace and ignite it.
What Do I Need To Make A Fire In DayZ?
You will need to make a fireplace. This consists of a stick and some kindling – the kindling can be some rags, or a piece of paper (you can get paper from opening seed packets or ammo boxes etc.)
You can get sticks from bushes nearby. Its better to have a knife when collecting sticks from bushes so that you dont hurt your hands. Gloves should help if you dont have a knife. Long sticks can be split into shorter sticks.
You will need some fuel to add to the fire also. This can be more sticks if you can get them, but better to use firewood which can be got by chopping down trees and breaking up the logs with an axe.
Igniting the fire requires either some matches that are approaching being dry, a lighter or a drill kit. You will need some form of knife to scrape treebark off a nearby tree in order to craft a drill kit (explained below)
It should be obvious by now that a Knife is essential for early game fire making. This makes it one of the most importand finds when you are starting out as a fresh spawn.
Where Can I Find The Stuff Needed To Make A Fire?
Your going to need to gather some equipment and raw materials if you are planning on making a fire. Heres a useful table to help you locate some of this stuff.

I Dont Have A Lighter Or Matches. What Can I Do?
Without a lighter or matches your options are very limited. You will need to make something called a drill kit. This is a crafted device that allows you to ignite a fire.
To make a drill kit you can use a stick and some tree bark. Sticks can be obtained from bushes with your bare hands or a preferably a knife. Bark can be obtained by scraping bark off a tree. Again you will need some knife type item. Combine the bark and stick together in your inventory and use your controls to select the Craft Drill Kit option. Once crafted, the kit will appear on the ground. Place the kit in your hand and approach the fireplace and you should see an option to ignite fire.
All My Gear Is Wet. Can I Still Make A Fire?
You you can still make a fire, although it may take some time to ignite it. Dont worry if the wood used is wet, but if your matches are wet then you wont be able to use them. In this case you will need to craft a drill kit and use that, as discussed earlier.
If it is windy you may also have problems igniting your fire. Try to build your fire out of the wind and rain if possible.
Where Should I Build A Fire In DayZ?
The best place to build your fire depends on the situation but I prefer to build my fires in buildings that have the large oven. These are much easier to keep alight and also they have more room on to cook food on so more food can be cooked quicker.
You won’t be able to place your fire on the floor in most buildings. The ceiling height needs to be quite high and so only the largest buildings will allow you to do this.
One of the problems with fires is that they can give away your location because of the smoke and light they give off. If you have to build a fire outdoors, try to make sure that it is away from where other players my see – such as deep in a wood. The light from fires can be see from quite a distance away at night so you need to be aware of whats going on around you if you try this.
How Do I Put My Fire Out?
You can put out fires by pouring water on them. If you have water to spare or are near a river or well then it might be worth doing this to make it harder for other players to track you.
Simply approach the fire with the water container in your hand and you will see an option to extinguish the fire. You can also put out the fire with a digging implement such as a shovel. This has the advantage of not wasting any water too.
Other Tips Related To Making Fires In DayZ
- Fires are hot obviously so dont go to near them or you may get burned
- Fires are a great way to cook food. Use a long stick to poke through a chicken breast and roast
- Trees and bushes can be found almost everywhere so you are always in reach of wood for fires
- If your clothes are wet, take them off in front of the fire to speed up the drying process
- Keep your matches in a waterproof container so they will be dry and ready when needed
- Fireplaces can be stacked inside your inventory so you will be ready to make a fire in moments
- Bullets and gas cannisters will not explode in a fire
